Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Although debuting in second place at the weekend box office, 80 for Brady again secures its place as the widest release of the week as it adds 27 locations from last week, becoming available 3,939 theaters. The comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno debuted to $12.7 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six day haul of $17.9 million. The second-widest release this week is newcomer, Knock at the Cabin. Playing in 3,643 locations, the M. Night Shyamalan psychological horror film follows a family who, when taken hostage, are forced to make a choice to avoid the apocalypse. More...

Theater counts: Otto overtakes Way of Water to become this week’s widest release

January 19th, 2023

A Man Called Otto

After spending five weeks as the widest release, Avatar: The Way of Water finally drops into the second spot, going from 4,045 locations last week, to 3,790 this week. In its place, the widest release this week will be A Man Called Otto. After expanding into 3,802 theaters last week, the film retains that count this week. The Tom Hanks comedy-drama has earned just over $25 million since debuting in just four cinemas on December 30. More...

Theater counts: Way of Water cruises into 2023

January 5th, 2023

Avatar: The Way of Water

After making its North American debut on December 16th, Avatar: The Way of Water has amassed a staggering $465 million from a steady 4,202 locations. Internationally, the James Cameron juggernaut has performed even better, scoring $1.05 billion since its release, already eclipsing the $769 million that Top Gun: Maverick earned during its seven-month run. Way of Water actually adds 138 viewing locations this week, making it once again this week’s widest release, playing in 4,340 venues. We will at least have one brand new wide release this week to give it some competition. More...

Holiday theater counts: Avatar Way of Water holds off three new contenders to remain widest release

December 22nd, 2022

Avatar: The Way of Water

As the Christmas holiday approaches, there are plenty of options for movie-goers as three new high-profile films arrive to the big screen this week. After accruing over $134 million in its opening weekend in North America, Avatar: the Way of Water currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $183 million, with $426 million from overseas markets, for global earnings so far of $609 million. The film retains its opening-weekend count of 4,202 theaters, once again making it the widest release. While Way of Water should have no problem winning the weekend box office, a bevy of new releases look to provide an assortment of viewing opportunities for nearly every movie taste. More...

Theater counts: Wakanda Forever is back as widest release, but Avatar: The Way of Water looms

December 8th, 2022

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

As expected, this week witnesses a lull in new releases arriving to theaters, as well as the top films dropping in viewing locations. In fact, we have to go back nearly three months, to September 16, 2022 to not see a film registering over 4,000 locations. This week Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is back on top with 3,725 cinemas, and more so as a result of last week’s widest release, Strange World, shedding 614 theaters this week, beginning its third week at the box office in 3,560 venues. As everyone is likely aware, this week is just the calm before the storm until Avatar: The Way of Water makes landfall on December 16. More...

Theater counts: Don’t Worry Darling debuts in 4,113 theaters and Avatar returns to the big screen

September 22nd, 2022

Don’t Worry Darling

As another weekend approaches, another new arrival takes over as the widest release of the week. Releasing in more theaters than originally projected, Don’t Worry Darling makes its theatrical entrance in a robust 4,113 locations this week, which is more than enough to overtake last week’s widest release and box office number one, The Woman King, as the latter keeps its opening count of 3,765 theaters from its inaugural week. Don’t Worry Darling technically isn’t the only new wide release of the week, as On the Come Up hits the scene by playing in 603 cinemas. Mega-hit Avatar is being re-released in 1,860 locations prior to its successor, Avatar: The Way of Water’s December 16th launch. More...
