Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: The Nun II becomes widest release while holding off a string of newcomers

September 14th, 2023

The Nun II

Last week’s box office winner, The Nun II has gained ground in theaters from its opening frame, adding 15 locations for a total of 3,743 theaters, finding itself as this week’s widest release. The horror sequel tallied up $32.6 million in its opening weekend and currently holds a six-day total of just over $40 million. That total brings The Conjuring franchise to a worldwide total of just over $2.2 billion from nine films, including its predecessor, The Nun, which delivered $363 million of that back in September of 2018. This week will see the debut of three new wide releases, including the latest in the mysteries of Hercule Poirot. More...

Weekend predictions: The Equalizer 3 has a shot at franchise-best opening

September 1st, 2023

The Equalizer 3

The question this weekend is not which film will win, but whether The Equalizer 3 will have the best opening weekend for an Equalizer film. The bar is set at $36 million, which was how much The Equalizer 2 managed back in 2018. Our model thinks the franchise capper could top that figure, although it doesn’t look like it will do so by much. With the likes of Barbie, Gran Turismo and Blue Beetle fading, there won’t be much competition for top spot. More...

Theater counts: The Equalizer 3 charges into 3,965 theaters

August 31st, 2023

The Equalizer 3

It will be one week and done for Blue Beetle as the widest release as this weekend’s only new wide release makes its way into theaters and to the top of the list in the form of the third installment of The Equalizer franchise. While Blue Beetle pulled in a solid $12 million in its second weekend, it was stymied by newcomer Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story, along with the continued success of worldwide phenom, Barbie, which took the first and second place prize respectively at the box office. Theater counts: Blue Beetle rebuffs an onslaught of newcomers to become widest release

August 24th, 2023

Blue Beetle

While holding steady from its opening count of 3,871 theaters, Blue Beetle becomes the latest film to become the widest release in its sophomore frame, partially due to Barbie finally dropping below the 4,000-theater mark after spending four of its five weeks as the most widely-available film in North America. Blue Beetle topped last weekend’s box office with just over $25 million and currently holds a six-day domestic total of $32.19 million. This week, however, brings on a slew of fresh films ready to challenge Blue Beetle and Barbie for the box office crown. More...

2018 Preview: July

July 1st, 2018

Ant-Man and the Wasp

June was amazing, with two absolute monster hits and a solid $100 million hit. By the end of the month, 2018’s lead over 2017 will be well over $500 million, or close to 10%. Even if 2018 only managed to maintain this lead in terms of raw numbers for the rest of the year, it will be a massive jump at the box office. As for July, there are a couple of potential monster hits, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Mission: Impossible—Fallout, plus four potential $100 million hits. Last July, there was only one monster hit, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and three $100 million hits. I don’t think 2018 will match 2017 at the top, but 2018 appears to have more depth and that should put it a little ahead over the full month. More...
