The Directors Guild of America were the last major Awards Season group to hand out their nominations and did so over two days this week. Not surprisingly, for the most part, the same group of films appear on this list as have appeared on the rest of the Awards Season nominations. Birdman, Boyhood, and The Imitation Game all make appearances,

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary

Notes and Reactions...

  • Birdman, Boyhood, and The Imitation Game are not even close to surprises.
  • Wes Anderson got his first DGA nomination for for The Grand Budapest Hotel. I'm glad a comedy was among the five nominations, but I'm surprised it took this long for Wes Anderson to earn a nomination.
  • American Sniper is the odd man out in this category and I can think of several films that deserved it more than this film did, like Selma, for instance.
  • Best Documentary categories continue to have little or no overlap. This is going to make predicting this category really hard.
