2014 Awards Season: WGA: A.I. and Pirates Told the Right Stories
February 1st, 2014
WGAs handed out their awards on Saturday and depending on who you talk to, there were a couple of major upsets. There was certainly at least one upset, but the other awards are less surprising.
The categories and winners are...
- A lot of people are arguing that Original Screenplay was an upset this year, as Spike Jonze for Her, while David O. Russell and Eric Warren Singer were the favorites to win for American Hustle. Personally, I didn't think there was a favorite. No movie had even a 40% chance of winning and while if I was forced to make a bet, it wouldn't have picked Spike Jonze to win, this is hardly enough to say it is an upset.
- On the other hand,
- Billy Ray winning for Captain Phillips, as I thought it was a two-horse race between Before Midnight and The Wolf of Wall Street.
- Sarah Polley won for Stories We Tell, which is the least surprising win for the night. She would have been the favorite to win the Oscar, if she wasn't snubbed by voters.
