How to Train Your Dragon - Collector's Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon

How to Train Your Dragon 2 hits theaters in just a few weeks, so the studio is releasing How to Train Your Dragon on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack this week. What's new with the Blu-ray? And is it worth picking up?

The Movie

I've previously reviewed the movie, so there's no need to go over it again. I did watch the movie to see if the technical presentation was an improvement and I can say my opinion hasn't changed. I loved the movie the first time I saw it and it is just as good this time. This isn't always the case and there are times when movies don't live up to second viewings.

The Extras

The only new extra on the Blu-ray is Frozen, an episode of Dragons: Defenders of Berk. They also include the extras from the Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury, which I reviewed here.

As for the technical presentation, the video is the same, but the audio has been upgraded to a 7.1 surround sound track, which was previously only available on the 3D version of the movie. In both cases, they are near reference level material.

The Verdict

How to Train Your Dragon - Collector's Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack collects a lot of the old extras on one Blu-ray and does have 7.1 surround sound for the first time on a 2D version of the movie, but I can't say that's worth $26 for the upgrade. In fact 3D Combo Pack is only $20, so if you don't have the movie on Blu-ray yet, that might be the better deal.
