Blu-ray Sales: Week of January 6th: In the Loop

February 24, 2013

New releases were a bit of a mess, as Christmas Day was a Tuesday, so there were a few releases that came out the following Monday. One of those releases, Looper, led the Blu-ray sales chart during the week of January 6th with 317,000 units / $6.66 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 34%, which is lower than I was expecting. The Dark Knight Rises fell to second place with 112,000 units / $2.78 million for the week for totals of 4.01 million units / $82.73 million after a month of release. Ted was right behind with 111,000 units / $2.77 million. After four weeks of release, the film has sold 2.28 million units and generated $50.42 million in revenue, which is amazing for a comedy. Total Recall rose to fourth place with 88,000 units / $2.20 million for the week and 579 million / $13.76 million after three. This isn't great compared to its production budget, but at least it looks like it will eventually cover its expenses. Eventually. Maybe. Pitch Perfect rounded out the top five with 84,000 units / $2.01 million for the week for totals of 613,000 units / $13.25 million after three. This is actually quite good, given the genre. It's excellent compared to its production budget.

Justified: Season Three opened in 13th place if you go by units sold with 33,000, but it placed 10th if you go by revenue with $1.17 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just under 20%, which is low for the format as a whole, but fine compared to most TV on DVD releases.

The overall Blu-ray market again fell dramatically when compared to last week but grew compared to last year. In total, there were 44% fewer units sold and 46% less revenue generated when compared to last week. On the other hand, when compared to last year, 11% more units were sold while the total revenue was 26% higher. DVD sales held on better when compared to last week, but still fell 38% in terms of units and 32% in terms of revenue. Its growth compared to last year was much stronger up 38% in terms of units and 53% in terms of revenue. As a result, the overall Blu-ray share fell to 28% in terms of units and 34% in terms of revenue. That's too low.

Next week, we continue to catch up on home market sales with the new releases from the week of January 8th. We would have a split decision with Frankenweenie opening in first place on the DVD chart and Dredd doing the same on Blu-ray. Moneyball was the big winner last year leading the new releases to top spot on the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts. I don't think anything this year will match its debut.
