Per Theater Chart: Fruits of Their Labor

July 16, 2013

Fruitvale Station earned top spot on the per theater chart with an outstanding average of $53,898 in seven theaters. This is the third best per theater average for the year, behind Spring Breakers and The Place Beyond the Pines. Last week's winner, The Way Way Back, slipped to second place with $14,201 in 79 theaters. Its theater count tripled and this average suggests it will expand a lot more before it is done. Crystal Fairy was right behind with an average of $12,526 in two theaters. There were three wide releases in the $10,000 club, led by Grown Ups 2 with an average of $11,890, while Pacific Rim was right behind with an average of $11,385. The overall box office leader, Despicable Me 2, rounded out the $10,000 club with an average of $10,965.

The new limited releases were less than stellar. Terms and Conditions May Apply earned $4,446 in its lone theater. V/H/S 2 bombed with an average of $828 in twelve theaters, but given its reviews and its genre, it will do better on the home market. Revelation Road 2 was even weaker with an average of $744 in five theaters. Finally there's Pawn Shop Chronicles, which earned $4,915 in 15 theaters for an average of $328. Had it made $4,915 in total, it would have only been average.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Way Way Back earned more than $1 million over the weekend, thus reaching its first milestone. It will get to $2 million shortly, and could become the biggest limited release hit of the summer.
  • The East got to $2 million, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Much Ado About Nothing topped $3 million since this time last week and it has a real shot at $4 million.
  • The Bling Ring got to $5 million since this time last week, but that's as far as it will go. This is a great total for a limited release, but given the pedigree, it should have gotten further.
