DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 10th, 2013

September 10, 2013

The home market is looking to be a whole lot brighter this week with Star Trek into Darkness leading the way. It's not the only first-run release to come out this week, but it is by far the biggest. On the other hand, there are tons of TV on DVD releases, tons and tons of them. This includes Homeland: Season Two, which is a contender for Pick of the Week. However, the screener is on its way, so I'm going to hold off on that declaration. Instead, that honor goes to Castle: Season Five. Meanwhile, War Witch's DVD release earns the Puck of the Week for the best Canadian release.

Army Wives: The Complete Seventh Season - Buy from Amazon
I liked this show for a while, but Season Six fell a part for me. If you gave up then, I don't think Season Seven is worth returning to.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Sixth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
There are some who love this show, a lot really, as it was the third highest rated show on TV last season. On the other hand, there are some who think it is mocking nerds, but I don't think that's the case. The extras on the DVD and Blu-ray are good, but not great. It is still worth picking up, but not Pick of the Week material.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Fly, Jennifer 8, Jesus Christ Superstar 2012 Live Arena Tour, Joy Ride, Marathon Man, Sliver, Snake Eyes, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Criterion Collection), and The Talented Mr. Ripley
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases of note. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is worth picking up, unlike most of the others.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Nightmare Before Christmas and Star Trek Into Darkness
How many times is Nightmare going to come out on the home market?

Blue Bloods: Season Three - Buy from Amazon
This police procedural has a large, but older fanbase. It has strong overall viewship numbers, but its ratings are weak enough that without syndication rights, it would likely not survive to be renewed. Does it have an older fanbase because it is old-fashioned? Can it stand out in a very crowded marketplace? Read our review for my opinion.

Castle: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
There are a metric ton of police procedurals on the air at the moment, but this one stands out thanks to the chemistry of the cast and the mix of humor and drama. Is season five as strong as previous seasons? Is it worth being chosen Pick of the Week? Check out our review to find out.

Chasing Ice - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An environment documentary that earned incredible reviews. There are a lot of films in this sub-genre, but this one is worth checking out regardless of the crowded field.

Chicago Fire: Season One - Buy from Amazon
A pretty good hit for NBC, it looks in on a fire department in Chicago. This isn't a really unique setup and its reviews were mixed.

Christmas Releases: The Smurfs Christmas Carol
It's too early for Christmas.

Frankenstein's Army - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I might try and grab a copy of this film to review. It seems right up my alley and the reviews are good.

Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection - Buy from Amazon
This franchise has been released on DVD so many times that I'm not sure it is worth picking up again. On the other hand, Crystal Lake Memories is definitely worth picking up for fans of the franchise.

Homeland: The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release. I loved the first season, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this one.

Love Is All You Need - Buy from Amazon
This film earned good reviews and did very well in limited release earning more than $1 million. It will be interesting to see how well it does on the home market.

Luther 3 - Buy from Amazon
An award winning police procedural from the BBC. Like most such releases, the price-per-minute is insanely high for TV on DVD releases. It's actually pretty high if you consider it a couple TV movies. That said, its reviews are amazing.

Madonna: The MDNA Tour - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Madonna has been making music for decades now, but her popularity hasn't really waned and she can still sell out concerts worldwide. This particular concert was the most successful tour of last year and if you missed it, the DVD or Blu-ray is a must have.

Mama's Family - Buy from Amazon: Season One and Season Two
I'm still waiting for the screener(s) for this show. There are also couple Best Of releases for Season One and Season Two, as well as a Complete Series Megaset available only on TimeLife.com.

Marvel Knights: Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk - Buy from Amazon
I really like these motion comics from Marvel, so I'm going to have to see if I can get a screener for this one.

Parade's End - Buy from Amazon
A British Mini-series about the changing times in Britain just before World War I. The mini-series earned great reviews and picked up five Emmy nominations. If you like the genre or the cast, it is worth picking up.

The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow - Buy from Amazon
A 22-minute long TV special with no special features. It's cheap, but that's all it has going for it.

Star Trek into Darkness - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack
The biggest hit in the Star Trek Franchise. A lot of people seem to think so, but am I one of them? Or am I just too much of a Star Trek nerd to get into this new version? Read our review to find out.

Also coming out this week is yet another Complete Franchise Box Set on both Blu-ray and DVD.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
A single-disc, mixed release from Star Trek. There have been way, way too many of these released over the years. Is it worth checking out of fans? Or should they stick with the full season sets? Check out our review for my opinion.

Supernatural: The Complete Eighth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the highest rated shows on the CW, although that's not saying much. Fans will certainly want to pick up this DVD / Blu-ray, as there are more than enough extras to make it worthwhile (audio commentary tracks, making of featurette, deleted scenes, outtakes, etc.). On a side note, this season should prove interesting, as there's a spin-off in the works.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: Mama's Family
Just the one Megaset this week, and you can't get it on Amazon.com. I think a screener is on its way, which is the main reason I mention it here.

Tyler Perry Presents Peeples - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I believe this is the worst performing wide release of the summer. One could argue other films lost more money than this one did, but this one had the lowest total box office revenue. Its reviews are pretty bad, but not as bad as its box office numbers.

War Witch - Buy from Amazon
A Canadian movie that earned nearly perfect reviews, not to mention an Oscar nomination. It still struggled in limited release, but it is worth checking out and hopefully it will find a bigger audience on the home market.

Wish You Were Here - Buy from Amazon
This film earned good reviews, but it died at the box office. Hopefully it will find an audience on the home market, but I'm not hopeful.

WWE: Legends of Mid-South Wrestling - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm not a fan of wrestling in general and the WWE in particular. However, these releases sell very well, so I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention them.
