International Box Office: Elysium On Top, But White House Moves Up

September 13, 2013

Elysium remained in first place with $21.31 million on 10,731 screens in 52 markets for totals of $127.46 million internationally and $212.57 million worldwide. Of that, $11.75 million came from 6,253 screens in China, which was enough for first place there. Not this weekend, but next weekend, the film opens in Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and other markets, so it should be a player on the international market for a few weeks, but it will need help on the home market to break even.

White House Down has been quickly pulling in international box office dollars. This weekend it placed second with $12.65 million on 3,801 screens in 31 markets for a total of $79.99 million. Worldwide it has $152.98 million, which is a little more than it cost to make, but not nearly enough to break even. This weekend it opened in a number of major markets doing okay business, for the most part. Its biggest market was Germany where it made $2.85 million on 649 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.05 million. That's about equivalent to a $20 million opening here. Like I said, that's okay. It opened with $2.02 million on 451 screens in France, which was also enough for first place, while it earned first place in both Australia with $1.70 million on 279 screens and in Brazil with $1.50 million on 365 screens. It only managed second place in Mexico with $1.64 million on 840 screens. It will crack $100 million internationally, which is enough to save face, but not enough to break even.

We're the Millers rose to third place with $9.9 million on 3,400 screens in 41 markets for an international total of $55.1 million. The film debuted in third place in Mexico with $915,000 on 459 screens. This isn't a good start, but it was a surprise hit domestically, so its international numbers are more or less pure gravy.

The Conjuring's international total is almost as high as its domestic total, and it was a surprise hit here, so the studio should be giddy with its success. This weekend, the film landed in fourth place with $8.5 million on 3,800 screens in 47 markets for totals of $124.5 million internationally and $259.69 million worldwide. This is more than enough to break even, plus it has yet to open in Brazil, South Korea, Japan, and other markets, so it is not done yet.

One Direction: This is Us fell to fifth place with $7.56 million on 3,411 screens in 66 markets for a total of $26.45 million. The film opened in first place in Italy with $2.07 million on 318 screens, which is good for the market. It fell nearly 50% during its second weekend in the U.K. with $1.75 million on 831 screens for a two-week total of $9.05 million.

The Smurfs 2 was next with $7.54 million on 5,715 screens in 71 markets for totals of $199.88 million internationally and $268.05 million worldwide. It is doing better internationally than it did domestically, but it would need to earn a lot more just to break even.

Riddick opened in seventh place with $7.4 million in 31 markets. Its biggest market was the U.K. where it managed second place with $2.21 million on 400 screens. Its best market was Spain where it earned first place with $1.17 million on 324. On the other hand, it flopped in Italy with just $799,000 on 295, which was only enough for fourth place.

Disney's Planes was next with $7.0 million in 31 markets for a total of $41.9 million so far. The film almost covered its production budget domestically, so it if can do as well internationally, it will break even before it reaches the home market.

Grown Ups 2 landed in ninth place with $6.64 million on 3,233 screens in 54 markets for totals of $83.06 million internationally and $213.70 million worldwide.

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters fell to tenth place with $6.0 million in 49 markets for an international total of $93.3 million. It should bounce back this upcoming weekend thanks to a trio of major market openings, but it will likely end its run before matching its predecessor.
