DVD Sales: Lots of Tempting New Releases

September 23, 2013

There were a ton of new releases to reach the top 30 of the July 14th, 2013 edition of the DVD sales chart. This includes five films in the top six, which is impressive. (One could argue it is more a matter of quantity over quality.) Leading the way was Tyler Perry's Temptation, which sold 401,000 units and generated $2.97 million in revenue. This is a fine start, but nothing more. The second place went to Tyler Perry's the Haves and Have Nots with 202,000 units / $2.62 million. The only holdover in the top five was Despicable Me, which placed third with 172,000 units / $2.49 million over the week. Its running tally rose to 9.13 million units / $149.59 million. It has a shot at cracking 10 million units sold when Despicable Me 2 comes out on the home market. The Host earned fourth place with 144,000 units / $2.62 million. It bombed in theaters and struggled on DVD. At least it did better on Blu-ray. Dead Man Down rounded out the top five with 107,000 units / $1.82 million. This is actually better than I was expecting, given its theatrical run.

Spring Breakers just missed the top five with 91,000 units / $1.36 million. This is a good start for a limited release, but it's weaker than Dead Man Down, which earned less at the box office. Admission missed the top ten earning 11th place with 52,000 units / $997,000. It bombed in theaters and now it is bombing on the home market. The final new release to chart was The Legend of Korra: Book One Air, which landed in 17th place with 37,000 units / $521,000. This is great for a TV on DVD release.
