International Box Office: Gravity Stable On Top

October 16, 2013

Gravity remained in first place with a nearly identical result as last weekend. It was up a barely noticeable amount to $28.5 million on 5,785 screens in 38 markets for a two-week total of $68.3 million internationally. This hold is even more impressive, as its only major market debut came in Brazil, where it opened in second place with $1.67 million on 219 screens. On the other hand, it was down just 9% in Australia with $3.03 million on 471 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.29 million. It fell a little more in Germany down 17% to $3.04 million on 614 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.12 million. In both of those markets, it remained in first place. It fell faster in Russia down 48% landing in second place with $3.88 million on 1,155 million screens over the weekend for a total of $14.12 million after two weeks of release.

Stalingrad earned second place with $17.34 million on 1,667 screens in two markets. Those two markets are Russia, where it earned first place with $16.20 million on 1,500 screens, while it managed $1.13 million on 167 screens in the Ukraine.

Despicable Me 2 returned to the top ten in third place with $11.0 million on 3,011 screens in 38 markets for totals of $522.97 million internationally and $886.03 million worldwide. The film finished its international run in Italy earning first place with $6.99 million on 863 screens.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 rose to fourth place with $9.21 million on 3,047 screens in 32 markets for an early total of $21.52 million. The film remained in top spot in Brazil down just 6% to $2.99 million on 660 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.40 million after two weeks of release. It is still early in its international run, but it has already crossed $100 million worldwide.

Prisoners reached fifth place with $8.6 million in 45 markets for a total of $24.0 million so far. It earned third place in both France and Germany with $2.60 million on 258 screens and $1.40 million on 254 screens respectively. On the other hand, it remained in first place in the U.K. with $1.55 million on 449 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.07 million after three.

Now You See Me returned to the chart in sixth place with $8.2 million in 22 markets for a total of $215.3 million internationally and $333.0 million worldwide. It opened in second place in China with $9.81, of which $8.0 million came over the weekend.

Insidious: Chapter 2 was next with $7.53 million on 2,835 screens for a total of $37.07 million after a month of release. The film managed third place in Mexico with $1.15 million on 876 screens, but only fourth place in Italy with $991,000 on 269.

Planes bounced back into the international chart crossing $100 million in the process. Over the weekend, the film made $6.2 million in 49 markets for totals of $102.3 million internationally and $190.7 million worldwide. It opened in first place in France with $3.63 million on 500 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.25 million.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon fell from second to ninth with $6.0 million in 9 markets over the weekend for a total of $85.5 million so far. This is still a fantastic run and the Chinese film should find a significant audience in more international markets.

Rush also earned $6.0 million while playing in 24 markets for a running tally of $40.0 million. The film had no major market openings, but it opens in Russia this weekend.

Turbo fell out of the top ten, but it did reach $200 million worldwide. However, it did cost $135 million to make, so it will need some help on the home market to break even.
