Per Theater Chart: Slave Can't Escape Top Spot

October 29th, 2013

For the second weekend in a row, 12 Years a Slave remained in top spot on the per theater chart. Despite expanding to 123 theaters, the film's average remained potent at $17,352. The Square was right behind with $16,359 in its lone theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Capital, which earned an average of $11,200 in two theaters.

We don't have many box office numbers for many other new limited releases, but all of them did rather well. Blue is the Warmest Color earned an average of $7,557 in 17 theaters, including some from Canada, where the film was in its sophomore stint. Long Shot: The Kevin Laue Story was right beind with $7,006 in its one theater. Likewise, Spinning Plates was just a hair behind with an average of $6,843 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Romeo and Juliet reached $1 million since this time last weekend, but that is as far as it will go. In fact, its theater count has fallen to just under 100 from a starting theater count of nearly 500.
  • I'm in Love with a Church Girl barely missed $1 million last weekend, but easily got there during the week. Its running tally is now very close to $2 million, but with a per theater average of just over $1,000, its theater count will quickly shrink.
  • Austenland just topped $2 million over the weekend, which is great for a romantic comedy. This should be enough to help it do even better on the home market.
  • On the other hand, 12 Years a Slave should continue to grow. It topped $1 million before the weekend and earned more than $2 million over the weekend. It probably won't get to $4 million till Friday, but by this time next weekend, it should be well past $5 million.
