International Box Office: Hunger Games Continues to Burn Bright

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire remained in first place on the international chart with $90.0 million in 79 markets for a total of $272.1 million. To put this into perspective, The Hunger Games finished with $276.5 million, so it is likely the sequel has already topped its predecessor internationally. The film opened in first place in France with $12.11 million on 755 screens. In comparison, The Hunger Games made $14.51 million in total in France, including $3.80 million during its opening weekend. The film also earned top spot in Italy with $5.05 million on 651 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.93 million. The original did poorly in that market with $1.29 million during its opening weekend and $3.83 million in total. Holdovers were led by the U.K., where it added $9.04 million on 557 screens over the weekend for a total of $35.36 million, or less than $2 million from its predecessor's total in that market. In Germany, the film pulled in $7.57 million on 670 screens over the weekend for a total of $24.63 million after two. The film film finished with $20.30 million in that market.

Gravity remained in second place, yet again, this time with $26.5 million on 6,615 screens in 53 markets for totals of $365.2 million internationally and $614.9 million worldwide. It remained in top spot in China with $22.74 million over the weekend for a total of $58.77 million after two. It dropped just 36%, which is better than most films in China manage.

Frozen debuted in third place with $16.7 million in 16 markets. The film had to settle for second place in Germany with $6.34 million on 629 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.32 million. On the other hand, it topped the chart in Spain with $3.45 million on 683.

The White Storm, formerly known as The Cartel War earned second place in China and fourth place internationally with $12.94 million in its native market.

Thor: The Dark World crossed $400 million internationally and is very close to $600 million worldwide. This weekend it added $12.2 million internationally for totals of $404.4 million / $591.1 million worldwide. It has yet to open in Japan, but it doesn't open there till February, so it will drop off the chart shortly.

Captain Phillips placed sixth with $6.67 million on 3,450 screens over the weekend for a total of $85.96 million. The film only managed fourth place in Japan with $1.19 million on 470 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.53 million. It earned second place in Mexico with $848,000 on 598 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $910,000.

The Counselor slipped another spot to seventh $5.7 million in 53 markets for an international total of $38.1 million so far. The film did fairly well in Spain with $1.51 million on 396 screens, which is enough for third place. It earned fourth place in Germany with $922,000 on 259 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $959,000.

Bullett Raja opened in first place in India and eighth place internationally with $5.5 million.

Fack ju Göhte fell to third place in Germany with $4.98 million on 692 screens over the weekend and $39.18 million in total. In Austria it added $330,000 on 69 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.54 million.

Carrie rounded out the top ten with $3.73 million on 2,260 screens for an international total of $29.67 million. The film opened in fifth place in both the U.K. ($1.08 million on 369 screens) and in Australia ($603,000 on 159).
