Per Theater Chart: Bikes and Sushi Top List

The Kid with a Bike took top spot on the per theater chart with an average of $15,311 in three theaters, while Jiro Dreams of Sushi was in a virtual tie with an average of $15,202 in six. Gerhard Richter Painting was next with $13,537 in its lone theater. The overall box office leader, 21 Jump Street, was next with an average of $11,632, while last week's winner, Footnote, was right behind with $11,181.

There were a few new limited releases that did quite well, as well as a few that bombed hard. Casa de mi Padre opened in the top ten overall with $2.29 million in 382 theaters for an average of $5,988. Detachment was close behind with an average of $5,370. Payback struggled with an average of $3,614 in three theaters. Likewise, Jeff, Who Lives at Home had a soft opening on the per theater chart with an average of $3,369, but it was playing 254 theaters, which is a lot. Around June finally opened after many, many delays, but it missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,530 in two theaters. The Understudy was even weaker with an average of $1,148, also in two theaters. It was a blockbuster compared to Reuniting the Rubins, which only made $734 in two theaters for an average of just $367. Playback is even worse was just $252 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Casa de mi Padre opened with more than $2 million and it will likely be at close to $5 million by this time next week.
• Speaking of $4 million, Friends with Kids reached that milestone over the weekend and should have little trouble getting to $5 million by this time next week. However, its per theater average is low and its theater count is high, so it will likely fade quickly after that.
• A Separation got to $5 million, but that's as far as it will go.
