Per Theater Chart: Nothing Left to Avenge

May 23, 2012

The Avengers was the only film to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart earning an average of $13,096. Elena probably would have earned a spot in the $10,000 club had it not opened on Wednesday. It earned $9,035 in one theater over the weekend, but $13,240 over its five-day opening.

There were a few new limited releases that did rather well, but most struggled. Hysteria opened with an average of $7,131 in five theaters, which expresses an ability to expand somewhat, but reaching any major milestones will be difficult. Polisse's opening average was $5,523 in three theaters. This is also good, but not great, and while the film should find some more theaters willing to play it, it won't expand significantly. Crooked Arrows was the widest limited release of the week debuting in 55 theaters, so its average of $4,661 was quite strong. Beyond the Black Rainbow had a mediocre opening of just under $5,000 in two theaters for an average of $2,479. Never Stand Still missed the Mendoza Line with just $1,951 in its lone theater, but at least it was close. Virginia wasn't as close with an average of $1,383 in five theaters. Mansome couldn't even get halfway to the Mendoza Line earning an average of just $920 in just 20 theaters. Despite its strong reviews, Quill: Life of a Guide Dog only managed $839 in two theaters. The Samaritan was even weaker with an average of $581 in three.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Marley got to $1 million, which is excellent for a documentary, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Bernie also topped $1 million, but it is still showing potential to expand and should get further.
  • Girl in Progress got to $2 million over the weekend, but its per theater average is soft enough that getting further is going to be difficult.
  • Bully made it to $3 million since this time last week, but it won't get beyond that.
  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel surpassed $5 million very early last Friday and it might get to $10 million before this Friday.
