Per Theater Chart: Cosmopolis is Cosmopolitan

August 22, 2012

Cosmopolis led the way on the per theater chart with an excellent opening of $70,000 in three theaters for an average of $23,446. Given its reviews, I'm not sure it will do well as it expands. Robot and Frank was also strong with an average of $17,770 in two theaters, while Compliance was right behind with $16,427 in one theater. Ek Tha Tiger didn't quite reach the $10,000 club over the weekend with an average of $9,655, but it was a Wednesday release, so had it opened on Friday, it likely would have easily made the cut.

There were quite a few other new limited releases to do well on the per theater chart. The best of the rest was Side by Side with $6,956 in its lone theater. Death by China earned $5,701, also in one theater. Chicken with Plums was right behind with an average of $5,651 in two theaters, while Beloved was close behind with an average of $5,165 in five theaters. The Awakening missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,370 in 70 theaters. It was the wrong genre and opened in too many theaters to thrive in limited release, but the reviews were not a major asset either. Why Stop Now was stopped in its tracks with an average of just $547 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Queen of Versailles reached $1 million since this time last week and it has a shot at $2 million.
  • Ek Tha Tiger earned more than $1 million over the weekend, so it obviously reached its first major milestone as well. It likely won't go too much further, as films aimed at the same target demographic tend to collapse really fast at the box office.
  • 2016: Obama's America exploded over the weekend earning more than $1 million from Friday through Sunday while pushing its running tally to over $2 million. It is already one of the biggest documentary hits of the year thus far.
