DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 11th, 2012

September 11, 2012

This week is again dominated with TV on DVD releases, including more than half the first page on Amazon.com's list of best-selling new releases. There is one first-run release that is doing really well: Snow White and the Huntsman - Extended Edition on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. It's worth picking up, but not Pick of the Week material. To find contenders for that title, one must look to the TV on DVD releases, including 30 Rock: Season Six and Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. But the winner was Castle: Season Four.

30 Rock: Season Six - Buy from Amazon
Still one of the best shows on TV, and still a major player during the Emmys. On the other hand, its ratings have suffered in the past few years. Then again, every show on NBC has seen its ratings decline. Extras include audio commentary tracks, featurettes, West Coast live feed for one episode, outtakes. This is worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials - Buy from Amazon
Perhaps not quite as good as the best episode from the regular series, but arguably better than average and definitely still absolutely hilarious. Worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Barbie: The Princess & The Popstar - Buy from Amazon
This franchise is one of the biggest direct-to-DVD franchises around and it routinely reaches the top ten on the Amazon sales chart for new releases. This one is currently in sixth place, showing Barbie is as popular as ever.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the more popular TV shows on TV at the moment. It tends to pick up a large number of Emmy nominations each year, but rarely wins. It if earns an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series two years in a row, it is worth picking up, even if it doesn't win. However, with weak extras (a trio of featurettes, outtakes, but no audio commentary tracks) it is not a contender for Pick of the Week.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Airplane, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Cleanskin, Elles, Jeepers Creepers, Karate-Robo Zaborgar, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Produced By George Martin, The Ring, Rosewood Lane, Spice & Wolf: Complete Series (Blu-ray/DVD Combo), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
It's a rather big list for secondary Blu-ray releases, but is it a case of quantity over quality and most were not even worth mentioning.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Ghosts of the Abyss 3D, Titanic, and Titanic Collector's Edition
Only two 3D releases this week, and while I was hoping to review both of them, it appears they ran our of screeners for both before they got to me. It's a shame, as I would have loved to have seen both films in 3D.

Blue Bloods: Season Two - Buy from Amazon
Blue Bloods is a show on CBS, which tends to struggle with the key age demographics when compared to its overall ratings. It airs on Friday, which is a night that fewer people in the key age demographics watch TV. Needless to say, it struggles to bring in younger viewers. Should these younger viewers give it a shot? Or is the TV show a little on the old-fashion side? Check out our review for my opinion.

Castle: Season Four - Buy from Amazon
One of several million police procedurals currently on TV at the moment. However, while this is a very crowded genre, this is still one of my favorite shows. Was season four as strong as season three? And how are the extras on the five-disc set? Read our review to find out.

Doctor Who - Buy from Amazon: Story 9: Planet of the Giants and Story 138: Vengeance on Varos
Two more Doctor Who DVD releases hit the home market this week, including one of the earliest, and more unusual stories. Planet of the Giants earned mostly good reviews from fans, but most comment that it is not like most other episodes, so keep that in mind. Vengeance on Varos was released on DVD more than a decade ago and in generally considered one of the best stories in an admittedly weak era.

For Greater Glory - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A Mexican film based on real life events that is aimed at the churchgoing set. It did very well in limited release, but critics were less impressed. Clearly there's little crossover appeal.

Girl in Progress - Buy from Amazon
Still waiting for the screener for this film. Hopefully it arrives soon and hopefully it is better than its reviews.

Goats - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Good cast. Terrible reviews. Moving along.

Hammer House Of Horror - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
A horror anthology series from Britain done by Hammer Studios, who are a master of the genre. It only lasted one season, but it still has many fans. It's worth checking out if you like the genre in general or the studios past work.

The Hole / Venom - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
A double-feature Blu-ray with two movies that were not major hits theatrically here. In fact, The Hole was never released in theaters here. Are they worth checking out on Blu-ray? And is the bargain Blu-ray worth the small price? Check out our review to find out.

Holiday for Love - Buy from Amazon
It's too early for Christmas.

Kojak: Season Five - Buy from Amazon
It is a bittersweet week for fans of this show, as the final season hits the home market.

Lewis Black: In God We Rust - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest stand-up concert DVD I've reviewed is not the first one from Lewis Black. Is this one better than his previous release? Is it worth picking up? Read our reviews for my opinion.

Lola Versus - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Still waiting for the screener for this release. I do like Greta Gerwig but the reviews were not good. I chose to remain cautiously optmistic.

The Loved Ones - Buy from Amazon
An Australia horror film that was a huge hit with critics, but struggled in limited release. Then again, most limited releases struggle in limited release. Now that it is out on the home market, will it succeed? Or was there a reason it struggled so much during its theatrical release? Check out our review to find out.

Private Practice: The Complete Fifth Season - Buy from Amazon
I thought this show was canceled at the end of last season. Its ratings have taken a hit, falling to 63rd place, while I was never a fan of the show.

Psych: The Psych-O-Ween Collection - Buy from Amazon
Great show, but unless you really, really want a Halloween DVD, stick with the full season sets, as they are much cheaper.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 19th of June.

Radio Rebel - Buy from Amazon
Finally. After several problems with getting this review done, it is finally on the site. Was it worth the long wait? Read our review to find out.

Snow White and the Huntsman - Extended Edition - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The main cast of Twilight have not had a lot of success when it comes to other films outside of the franchise. Did Kristen Stewart break the trend? Check out our review to find out.

Spartacus: Vengeance - The Complete Second Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Liam McIntyre takes over from Andy Whitfield, who sadly succumbed to cancer last year. That's a hard position to be in, but most fans will agree the show didn't suffer in quality as a result of the change. Extras on the DVD are good with a series of featurettes on various subjects. The Blu-ray is loaded with extended versions and audio commentary tracks on most episodes. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Strawberry Shortcake: Jammin' With Cherry Jam - Buy from Amazon
I usually get these DVDs to review, but I don't know if this one is late or just won't arrive. They are generally good for the target demographic, although the price-per-minute can be high.

Terra Nova: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon
I am still waiting for this DVD to arrive. The show earned good reviews, but its ratings were mixed and its budget was too high, so it was canceled. Will fans want to pick it up? Will newcomers want to try it out? I'll get to the review A.S.A.P. after the screener arrives.

Tim Tebow: On a Mission - Buy from Amazon
The tagline is, "His journey has just begun". Yeah, I don't think that's the case. Unless Sanchez goes down, he won't start many games this season.

Titanic - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, 3D Collector's Edition
This Blu-ray came out yesterday and yesterday was the first time I had ever seen the movie. What was my initial impression of the movie? Was it worth the wait? How many times did I say, 'When is the iceberg going to show up?' Read out review to find out.

Up All Night: Season One - Buy from Amazon
The pilot for this show earned some of the best reviews for new sitcoms last season and it did earn a People's Choice Awards nomination for best new sitcom. It's worth checking out, but with only some deleted scenes and a music video parody, there's not enough extras to lift it to a purchase for most people.

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the few shows on CW that isn't a complete disaster in the ratings. Of course, that's on a relative basis. The best show on CW earns ratings that would get it immediately canceled on any other network. The DVD and Blu-ray have four featurettes that run a combined 75 minutes, plus some deleted scenes and outtakes, but no audio commentary tracks. If you are a fan, it is worth picking up.

What to Expect When You're Expecting - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film earned terrible reviews and struggled at the box office. The DVD and the Blu-ray only have a couple featurettes and some deleted scenes, so they are not even worth a rental, unless you are a major fan of the genre or some of the cast.
