October 25, 2012

Paranormal Activity 4 opened in first place on the international chart with $26.35 million on 3,900 screens in 32 markets. This includes a number of major markets. It earned first place in Australia with $3.73 million on 321 screens and in Germany with $3.30 million on 316. It was also strong in Mexico topping the chart with $2.20 million on 956 and in Brazil with $1.81 million on 268. The film had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $4.08 million on 416 screens and in Russia with $3.90 million on 810 screens. While it missed first place, it still did well in both markets. On the other hand, it really struggled in Spain earning fourth place with just $918,000 on 238 screens. It is still too early to tell where the film will end up, but this is a good start

Taken 2 was right behind with $25.37 million on 7,819 screens in 66 markets for total of $177.86 million internationally and $283.69 million worldwide. This is already more than enough to show a profit. The film had no major market openings over the weekend, but it did add $3.63 million on 492 screens in the U.K. for a three-week total of $29.76 million.

Hotel Transylvania remained in third place with $15.31 million on 4,602 screens in 38 markets for a total of $69.01 million after a month of release. It doubled the nearest competitor in the U.K. with $9.68 million on 532 screens, while it added $3.20 million on 748 screens in Germany and now has $29.32 million after three weeks of release.

Fifth place went to Astérix And Obélix: God Save Britannia, the latest in the French franchise. It pulled in $11.74 million on 2,316 screens in 14 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $12.47 million. Most of that came from France, where it earned an easy first place with $8.19 million on 762 screens. The only other major market it opened in was Germany, but it struggled there placing sixth with $750,000 on 591 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $861,000.

Bait 3D rose a spot to sixth with $10.52 million in 6 markets for a total of $25.83 million. Most of this came from China, but we have no details to report. The film barely got a theatrical release here, so this is good news.

The Impossible became the biggest hit of the year in its native Spain with $26.15 million after just two weeks of release. This includes $9.14 million on 643 screens this past weekend.

Ted fell from second to eighth with $8.3 million on 2,365 screens in 42 markets for a total of $262.98 million internationally and $481.61 million worldwide. It should get to $500 million worldwide, but it will drop out of the top ten first.

Looper fell to ninth place with $8.03 million on 2,793 screens in 36 markets for a total of $70.70 million internationally. The film opened in Spain in second place with $1.24 million on 312 screens.
