Penguins March On

July 6, 2005

Despite a blockbuster opening by the competition, March of the Penguins was able to repeat on top of the Per Theater Charts with an average of $20,601. Coming in second was said blockbuster, War of the Worlds, which earned an average of $16,602 in just shy of 4,000 theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was The Beat My Heart Skipped. The French film earned $65,000 in just five theaters for a $13,073 average. On a side note, Me You and Everyone We Know brought in $11,392 on average in 26 theaters over the 4-day weekend.

This past week also saw some milestones reached for several Per Theater Charts alumnus:

  • Layer Cake hit $2 million midweek, but doesn't have the legs to last much longer.
  • Rize reached $2 million late midweek, but its quick descent at the box office suggests it has just a niche market appeal. Even so, it should reach $3 million before long, which is very strong for a documentary.
  • Howl's Moving Castle made it to $3 million during the weekend, but the film isn't living up to my high hopes.
