Three-Day Weekend Estimates: Hangover Sets Record with Huge Opening

May 29, 2011

The Hangover: Part II is set to earn $86.48 million over the three-day weekend, according to estimates released by Warner Bros. on Sunday. That puts it on track to top $100 million in just four days, and will be the biggest ever weekend for a comedy, barring an unexpected collapse on Sunday. Kung Fu Panda 2 is set to earn $48 million Friday-Sunday, which is a slightly disappointing result, but it should do very well on Memorial Day and is likely to enjoy a strong few weeks until the arrival of Cars 2 on June 24.

Hangover tops the list of comedy weekends by beating the $74 million earned by The Simpsons Movie in 2007:

The new Hangover also lands in second place on the all-time chart for biggest weekend for R-rated movies, but will most likely not beat the record held by The Matrix Reloaded:

Elsewhere this weekend, The Tree of Life and Midnight in Paris showed that art-house movies can enjoy the Summer too. Tree posted an incredible $352,000 opening weekend in just four theaters, while Midnight expanded to 58 theaters and is set for $1.9 million for the weekend at an average of over $30,000 per theater.
