Awards Season: Inglourious Winners

January 24, 2010

There were few surprises when the SAG awards were handed out this weekend, and no film dominated the night. Only one film, Inglourious Basterds, won more than one award, while most of the winners lined up with those handed out at other awards ceremonies so far this season.

The categories and nominations were...

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Notes and Reactions...

  • Inglourious Basterds was the big winner of the night with Best Cast and Best Supporting Actor. At this point, Christoph Waltz could be a lock for an Oscar.
  • Up in the Air was shut out. This really hurts its chances at $100 million at the box office. On the other hand, it has already earned nearly double its original expectation and with a reported budget of $25 million, profitability is inevitable.
  • There are four categories that match up between the Golden Globes and SAG, and they had the same winner all four times. Although the awards were shared between four different films, those hoping for surprises come Oscar night might be disappointed.
  • If this is a portent for Oscar night, we could have four first time winners. In fact, only Jess Bridges was previously nominated for an Oscar. (He has four nominations so far.)
