Saint of the Per Theater Chart

February 2, 2010

Saint John of Las Vegas rode an impressive cast to the top of the per theater chart with an average of $10,833, but given its reviews, I don't think it will stick around much longer. On the other hand, Avatar has been on this list for seven weeks now earning an average $10,176 this past weekend. However, unless the Oscar nominations help it at the box office, this will be the last time it appears on this list.

The rest of the new limited releases were spread out in terms of box office success. Off and Running opened with $7,978 in one theater, while North Face earned an average of $5,763 in four. On the other hand, Preacher's Kid missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,749 and Falling Awake was even worse at just $424.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • To Save a Life fell more than 50%, but still managed to reach $2 million over the weekend. Looking forward, $3 million should be easy to obtain, perhaps as early as this time next week, while $4 million isn't out of the question, but that's as high as I'm willing to predict.
  • Broken Embraces just made it to $4 million over the weekend while $5 million could be in its future.
  • As expected, A Single Man's running tally topped $5 million over the weekend. However, unless it starts winning awards, that's as far as it will go.
  • Crazy Heart continues to expand, more than doubling its theater count while nearly maintaining a $10,000 per theater average. This helped it reach $5 million over the weekend and it will have no trouble doubling that total before long, especially if it picks up s few Oscar nods later today.
