Weekend Estimates: Valentine's Day Record

February 14th, 2010

The industry is looking at a great Presidents' Day weekend with three movies topping $30 million over three days, and Avatar continuing to rake in money. Valentine's Day is, appropriately enough, the biggest winner with an estimated $52.4 million Friday-Sunday, a record for Presidents' Day weekend. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief scored a $31.1 million opening for Fox, and The Wolf Man picked up $30.6 million for Universal. All studios will be pleased with the results.

Avatar was down just 3.7% from last weekend at $22 million, and passed $650 million domestic box office in the process. Dear John was disappointing, however, falling almost 50% to $15.3 million in its second weekend. Perhaps it will improve on that with an unexpectedly strong Sunday performance.

In limited release, My Name is Khan scored an impressive $1.86 million opening for Fox Searchlight from 120 theaters.
