Alice Tops Avatar on IMAX

March 9, 2010

This weekend, Alice in Wonderland destroyed expectations and along the way broke records. This extended to its IMAX run, as it pulled in $12.1 million on 188 domestic IMAX screens. This represents more than 10% of its total box office from just 2.5% of its total screens, giving it a per screen average of $64,362. Even with the higher ticket prices for IMAX, this is still impressive. Additionally, the film made $3.1 million on 53 screens internationally, while it is scheduled to expand by 29 more screens over the coming weeks. I don't think this film will have the same legs as Avatar, but it could top The Polar Express's current total of $71 million worldwide, climbing into second place for a DMR film.

Up next for IMAX is Hubble 3D, which debuts on the 19th. How to Train Your Dragon opens the week after that.
