Lots of Green for Greenberg on the Per Theater Chart

Greenberg easily led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $39,384 in three theaters. This was more than twice as much as the second place movie, City Island, which averaged $16,001 in two theaters. Hubble 3D was the last film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,536 per theater, while The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just missed that mark with an average of $9,868.

Other new limited releases were all over the spectrum. Vincere earned an average of $9,048 in two theaters. Mid-August Lunch also played in two theaters and it earned an average of $6,545. The widest limited release of the week was The Runaways, which opened in more than 200 theaters. However, it only earned an average of $3,300 per theater, which is hardly enough to convince theater owners to add the film in the coming weeks. Given the cast and the reviews, they should have just opened the film wide with a national ad campaign. It likely would have had a better per theater average. It was better than Kimjongilia, which earned just $1,497 in its one theater. Further down the list was The Red Baron, with an average of just $929 in 15 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

• A Prophet topped $1 million over the weekend. It has a shot at $2 million.
• Ghost Writer expanded greatly, earning more than $2 million over the weekend, pushing its total past the $5 million mark. However, its per theater average fell to a point where more significant expansion seems unlikely. That said, $10 million is likely in the film's future.
• Strangely, Crazy Heart collapsed at the box office this past weekend, which was unexpected. That said, it still made $35 million and $40 million isn't out of the question. This is an excellent box office for a limited release.
