DVD Sales: 2012 Isn't a Disaster on the Home Market

New releases were able to dominate the sales chart this week in a way they were not able to last week. The best of the best was 2012, which sold 1.59 million units and generated $26.09 million in opening week sales.
Second place went to Where the Wild Things Are with 846,000 units / $16.11 million. Another new release, Ponyo, opened in third place with 222,000 units / $4.37 million. Law Abiding Citizen fell from first to fourth with 155,000 units for the week, giving it totals of 1.29 million units / $13.68 million after three weeks of release. Rounding out the top five was Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey with 117,000 units sold and $1.69 million in sales.
The TV mini-series, Alice, opened in 13th place with 61,000 units sold and $886,000 in revenue, which is good for this type of release. Likewise, the studio should be happy with the opening week sales of Strawberry Shortcake: The Berryfest Princess Movie. That release managed to move 39,000 units, earning $452,000 during its first week on the home market.
Blu-ray sales were spectacular this week, up 46% to $30.6 million. That's 188% higher than the same weekend last year. Compared to DVD, the format was just under 14% of total sales and just over 26% of the top 20 comparison. To put that in perspective, this was the second best week of 2010 in terms of total Blu-ray sales, the best week of the year in terms of year-over-year growth, third best in total percentage, and the best in terms of top 20 comparison. It's no real surprise that 2012 topped the chart. However, its Blu-ray percentage was a surprisingly strong: 41%, giving the film 1.1 million Blu-rays sold. Granted, this is the kind of special-effects laden film that is great for High Definition. Even so, it wasn't that big of a hit in theaters. Even more surprisingly, Where the Wild Things Are and Ponyo were also very strong. The former sold over 300,000 units and the latter sold over 100,000 units. Percentwise, their Blu-ray sales were simply amazing.
