Iron and Robin Finish One-Two on the Per Theater Chart

May 18, 2010

Just like they did in the overall box office, Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood top the per theater chart, finishing in the same order. It was a close race with Iron Man 2 coming out on top, $11,854 to $10,295.

None of the new limited release were able to make much of an impact on the box office and none came reasonably close to the $10,000 mark. The best was Princess Kaiulani, which is a bit of a shock given its reviews and its theater count. However, despite these issues, it opened with $190,000 in 33 theaters for an average of $5,666. The only other films we have box office numbers for were The Living Wake and Looking for Eric. The two films earned similar per theater averages, with the former pulling in $3,821 and the latter with $3,372.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Housefull reached $1 million since the last time we received box office numbers, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Exit Through the Gift Shop also made it to $1 million since last week. It has a real shot at $2 million.
  • The Secret in Their Eyes just managed to top $2 million over the weekend, but it should reach $3 million before too long.
  • As expected, City Island may have peaked at the box office, but it still surpassed $3 million early last week and is already more than halfway to $4 million.
  • It took nearly three months, but Ghost Writer finally got all the way to $15 million. On the one hand, this is great for a limited release. On the other hand, it cost $45 million to make, so someone is losing a lot of money on this project.
