Per Theater Chart: Cyrus Overshadows Toys

June 21, 2010

It was another strong weekend on the per theater chart with Cyrus leading the way with $180,000 in just four theaters for an average of $45,429. This is strong enough to suggest the potential to expand wide, or at least wide enough to secure some measure of mainstream success. The overall box office leader, Toy Story 3, was next with an average of $27,385. I Am Love opened with $120,000 in eight theaters for an average of $15,188. Meanwhile, The Killer Inside Me and The Girlfriends opened with relatively similar results, the former earning $11,083 in one theater while the latter earned $10,092, also in one theater.

There were a few other new limited releases, including some that did quite well at the box office. Let it Rain opened with an average of $8,145 in two theaters. Raavan opened with nearly $500,000 in more than 100 theaters for an average of $4,040. It might not make it to $1 million, however, as these films tend to evaporate quite quickly at the box office. Finally, there were a trio of documentaries, all of which had mixed results. Stonewall Uprising earned the best result with an average of $3,932 in four theaters. The Nature of Existence was next with $2,977 in one theater, while 8: The Mormon Proposition rounded out this week's list with and average of $2,660 in 16 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Solitary Man reached its first milestone early in the weekend and it is already halfway to its second.
  • Please Give topped $2 million since last week and it is the second Catherine Keener limited release of the summer to show potential for mainstream success.
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has reached $10 million, if you take into account its earlier run in Canada. Hopefully the remake will be as good as this movie. It should be a respectable hit at the box office if it this is so.
