International Top of the Chart: Toys Hit Century Mark

June 30, 2010

Toy Story 3 remained in the top spot on the international chart with $39.21 million on 5815 screens in 32 markets for a still early total of $103.90 million internationally and $330.79 million worldwide. The film is only playing in about a third of the international markets, including less than half of the major markets. It's the only major market opening of the weekend was in Australia, where it dominated with $6.47 million on 365 screens, which is a little stronger than Finding Nemo's opening back in 2003 and Pixar's best start in that market. Additionally, school holidays start next week, so the film could have long legs there.

Over in Latin America, the film has already become Pixar's biggest hit, with $62.2 million cruising ahead of Up's total of $50.1 million. $1 billion worldwide is looking more and more likely. In Mexico, it added $9.42 million on 1098 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.86 million in total. The current record-holder for an animated film in that market in Dawn of the Dinosaurs with just under $40 million. Toy Story 3 will reach that milestone by this time next week. It is also potent in Brazil, adding $3.72 million on 391 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.24 million, also after two. It is less than a week from topping Up in that market as Pixar's best. However, Ice Age 3 has a comfortable grip on the animated record there. (That film made more in Brazil than it did in Mexico.)

One of the few places where it is not making blockbuster numbers is in Russia. It was pushed into second place by the opening of Knight and Day, earning $1.38 million on 539 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.82 million. That's not terrible, but it is well back of Up's two-week tally of $8.31 million.

Next up for Toy Story 3 is Italy and Japan next week.

Knight and Day opened in second place overall, but we will get to that film, and the rest of the multimillion dollar movies, on the weekend.
