Eclipse Posts Biggest Wednesday Ever

July 1st, 2010

With a Wednesday opening that made it hard for some fans to get to theaters yesterday, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was not expected to break the record for the single biggest day's box office, but it sure came close. The final figure from Summit puts the movie at $68,533,840 for the day, just $4 million behind the all-time record held by New Moon (see list of biggest opening days). Equally impressively, the movie posted the biggest ever Wednesday box office, beating Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which opened one week earlier last year.

With the best reviews for any movie in the franchise so far, and a long weekend coming up, Eclipse is looking at piling up a lot of money over the next few days. Its target for Thursday will be to drop less than 50%, and thereby hit $100 million two days -- which will equal a record now held by four movies (see list). If it earns $34 million today, it will need about $88 million from Friday to Sunday to hit $200 million in five days, which would again equal the record, this one shared by The Dark Knight and Revenge of the Fallen.

Even if the movie can't maintain that kind of pace, its release is already a triumph for Summit, even with only one day's box office in the bank.
