DVD Sales: Cop Out on Top

August 3rd, 2010

It was yet another week of soft DVD sales with none of the new releases lighting up the sales chart. That said, Cop Out was able to take top spot with 325,000 units and $5.45 million in consumer spending at retail. The Bounty Hunter fell to second place with 215,000 units / $3.65 million for the week and 775,000 units / $13.36 million after two. The Losers opened in third place with 189,000 units / $3.22 million; compared to its theatrical box office, this isn't bad. Percy & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief remained in the top five for the fourth week in a row with 127,000 units / $2.46 million for a total sales of $26.65 million from 1.38 million units. The Runaways opened in fifth place with 124,000 units and $2.42 million in sales, which is almost as much as it made during its entire theatrical run.

The were no other new release to chart this week.

Blu-ray sales were... wow. On the one hand, they were up from last week by 24% to $13.7 million. On the other hand, sales were down 61% from last year, which is the worst year-to-year decline in the format's history. Keep in mind, last year saw the release of Watchmen, which sold more Blu-rays than Cop Out. Compared to DVDs, Blu-ray represented 12% of total sales and 22% of the top twenty sales and those figures are the best we've seen in a month. The top seller this week was The Losers at nearly 200,000 units. That's right, The Losers sold more Blu-rays than it did DVDs, which is a first for a day-and-date first-run release. Meanwhile, Cop Out was right behind with 190,000 units.

To emphasize, the home market as a whole is not doing particularly well at the moment and this has translated into lower Blu-ray sales. This is a concern, but it is not time to panic and things should turn around when more enticing High Definition releases come out. The wait will not be too long as Kick Ass comes out in a couple of weeks, and we could see better numbers. At worse, we might have to wait until the end of September when Iron Man 2 comes out.
