Amityville Scares Slump Into Submission

October 15, 2005

The Amityville Horror won the race for top spot on the rental charts with $8.78 million in DVD rentals and $520,000 in VHS rentals for a combined total of $9.30 million. This result, plus the rest of the competition, helped pull the rental market out of its extended slump.

The Interpreter came in second place with $8.72 million, just ahead of The Longest Yard with $8.02 million. Surprisingly, Robots had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten, falling by 22% to $5.22 for the week and $12.13 million during its run. On the other hand, Crash grew by 5% to $4.06 million for the week and $28.07 million during its run, and it's this run that may keep it in the minds of Oscar voters long enough to pick up a few nominations.

The only other theatrical release to chart this week was House of D with $1.51 million for the week, which is more than four times its total domestic run.

As I previously stated, the overall rental market saw growth this week of 13.4% from last week, and more importantly, 1.4% from last year. Year-to-date, 2005 has closed the gap with 2004 and is now down 5.0% at $5.9 billion.

Three animated tales topped the sales charts with Cinderella opening in first place ahead of Robots and Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story. The Amityville Horror was the second new release to make it into the top five, just ahead of The Longest Yard.

Other new releases include The Warriors in sixth place, The Interpreter in seventh and Stargate SG-1 - Season 8 Boxed Set in eighth.

Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story remained in first place on the TV on DVD sales chart this weekend ahead of Stargate SG-1 - Season 8 Boxed Set, which was the only new release in the top five. Lost - The Complete First Season climbed ahead of Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season with the former finishing third and the latter finishing fourth. Rounding out the top five was Firefly - The Complete Series in its 95th week of release, which bodes very well for Serenity's chances on the home market.

Two other new releases made it into the top ten with Drawn Together - Season One finishing in ninth and Alfred Hitchcock Presents - Season One coming in tenth.
