International Weekend: Curse Remains Unbroken

October 26, 2005

For the third weekend in a row Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit led the race on the international charts. This time it added $15.75 million on 3,782 screens in 32 markets to its total of $63.7 million so far. Slightly more than half of the film's weekend haul came from the U.K. where it added $8.3 million over the weekend, down 26.5% from its opening. It now has $29.4 million in that market, which is nearly half of its international total. Holdovers in other major markets were equally impressive as the film dropped just 19% in Germany to $1.86 million and 24% in France to $2.22 million. On the other hand, the film doubled its opening weekend haul in the Netherlands, taking in $440,000 over the weekend and $960,000 during its run. There was not much on the new openings front, but the film did take first place in Belgium with $427,000 on 86 screens, but that was since Wednesday.

Another stop motion animation film, The Corpse Bride, finished in second place with $9.4 million on nearly 2,000 screens in 19 markets. The film opened in first place in France with $2.67 million on 427 screens, and did the same in Mexico with $1.67 million on 300 screens. On the other hand, the film opened in second place in Japan with $1.55 million on 366 screens (the sub-$5,000 per screen average suggests short legs there) and in third place in the U.K. with $2.0 million on 385 screens. This was the film's first major push into the international market, but so far the film as earned a touch over $11 million and should top its domestic total before too long.

Flightplan's strong opening in Germany helped the film climb to third place with $8.5 million on 2,100 screens in 21 markets for a running tally of $21.5 million so far. The biggest single market was Germany where the film scored a first place, $3.65 million opening in 658 screens while it also won in Brazil ($550,000), Singapore ($475,000), Austria ($450,000), Sweden ($330,00), and Norway ($210,000).

Nanny McPhee may have only opened in one market and it may have failed to finish first, but it still did well enough in the U.K. that it was able to reach the top five. In its home market, the film finished second with $4.62 million on 427 screens, but unfortunately for the studio, that is not a good indicator for its potential internationally.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was knocked out of top spot in Japan but still snagged the final spot in the top five with $4.4 million for a $252.1 million total. It is also performing well in Greece where it dipped just 28% to $506,000 on 71 screens for a $1.4 million running tally there.
