Universal Extends King Kong, Sets New Budget Record

October 27, 2005

Variety reports that Universal has agreed to release a three-hour cut of Peter Jackson's holiday epic King Kong, a move that will push the budget to a record $207 million. The additional money will pay for special effects sequences.

In an indication of their commitment to the movie, Jackson and his wife, co-writer and co-producer, Fran Walsh, will cover much of the $32 million additional cost. They were originally to be paid $20 million for making the movie.

The changes were agreed after a screening for Universal executives of the first complete three-hour cut of the movie.
