International Top Five - Red Cliff Sequel Starts in the Black

Red Cliff 2, the sequel to the record breaking Red Cliff, opened in its native China with a stunning $14.85 million on 1398 screens. It also earned first place in Singapore with $873,000 on 47 screens, and combined it took first place on the international chart while playing in just those two markets.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa slipped into second place with $14.76 million on 6406 screens in 49 markets for a total of $366.65 million internationally and $544.14 million worldwide. The film opened in South Korea, but barely managed third place with $1.76 million on 456 screens over the weekend and $2.02 million in total. Meanwhile, it remained in first place in Poland with $1.98 million on 130 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.67 million after two. The film has yet to open in Japan, and depending on how well it does there, it should hit $400 million internationally, while $600 million worldwide is not out of the question.

Seven Pounds made its first real push onto the international charts placing third with $13.24 million on 2030 screens in 14 markets for a total of $16.88 million. The film's best market came in Italy where it placed first with $5.21 million on 553 screens, while it also did well in Germany placing second with $3.36 million on 467 screens. It also earned second in Australia and Mexico with more subdued results of $1.41 million on 261 screens and $1.03 million on 300 screens respectively. The film opens in France, Spain, Russia, and the U.K. this weekend, while it has major openings for the next month or so.

Twilight returned to the top five with $12.94 million on 2853 screens in 42 markets for a total of $125.51 million internationally and $306.96 million worldwide. It saw growth this week thanks to a first place, $5.49 million opening on 455 screens in France, while it has yet to open in Germany, Japan, and other markets.

Yes Man remained in fifth place with $12.77 million on 2313 screens in 32 markets for a total of $52.18 million. The film opened in second place in Italy with $3.38 million 349 screens, while it remained in first place in Australia with $1.65 million on 255 screens over the weekend and $5.86 million in total. Upcoming markets include France, Russia, Germany, while it doesn't open in Japan till mid-March. By that time, the film should reach $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide.
