Millionaire Richer after Golden Wins

January 21, 2009

The Golden Globe bounce wasn't exactly overwhelming after the winners were announced, but many of the winners have been in theaters too long to really benefit from the added publicity.

Slumdog Millionaire actually saw its theater count drop this past weekend, but its four wins still helped its weekend haul climb by more than $2 million, or 55%. The Wrestler doubled its weekend haul, but also doubled its theater count, so the effect of its win is limited. Revolutionary Road was the only other winner to show significant growth earning $1.78 million over the weekend, which was the best weekend so far.

The Reader actually saw declines, although its per theater average did climb somewhat. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Happy-Go-Lucky, Waltz With Bashir, and The Dark Knight all saw growth; however, these films have been in theaters for so long and the growth in raw dollars was so small, that it is hard to separate the Golden Globe Bounce from statistical noise. Finally, both In Bruges and WALL-E are no longer in theaters.
