International Top Five - Furious Still Running Fast

April 29, 2009

Fast and Furious took another victory lap on top of the international box office with $15.91 million on 6333 screens in 58 markets for a total of $170.94 million. This includes a first place finish in Italy; there the film topped the charts with ease, despite falling nearly 60% to $2.10 million on 422 screens over the weekend, while it has made $8.81 million after two. It fell even further in Australia down 62%, but it still managed to repeat on top with $2.17 million on 345 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.68 million. These large collapses during the film's second weekend of release are far too common during its international run; however, with $316.31 million worldwide, the movie is a smash hit, no matter how you look at it.

Monsters vs. Aliens opened in South Korea, but it was still unable to escape second place with $10.81 million on 5987 screens in 55 markets for a total of $142.96 million. In that one market, the film managed third place with $1.09 million on 370 screens over the weekend and $1.15 million in total, which is weaker than expected. On the other hand, it placed second in both the U.K. with $1.58 million on 493 screens and in Australia with $1.24 million on 352 screens. The film has made $27.40 million and $13.47 million in those two markets, each in four weeks.

City Of Life And Death placed first during its opening in China and third place internationally with $10.18 million on 1235 million.

17 Again reached the top five for the first time in its run with $7.65 million on 1415 screens in 17 markets for a still early total of $28.35 million. This is partially due to the film's third place opening in France where it earned $2.82 million on 392 screens. It also was solid in the U.K. with $1.49 million on 425 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.42 million, while in Australia it added $1.03 million on 220 screens to its total of $7.69 million.

Knowing was next with $6.54 million on 2980 screens in 33 markets for a total of $68.60 million. The film had no major openings, but it did managed first place in Norway with $165,000 on 38 screens, while it added $1.13 million on 371 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total of $4.04 million after two.
