DVD Sales - The Office Cranks it Up

September 26, 2009

It's the week before we get the sales numbers of the first of the summer blockbuster that hit the home market, so it comes as little surprise that the overall sales are weak this week. There were six new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart, including earning three of the top four spots, but it was a case of quantity above quality. The Office - Season Five was the lone bright spot, as the TV on DVD release captured first place with 407,000 units sold and a very impressive opening week sales of $13.91 million. Crank 2 - High Voltage placed second with 284,000 units, which is only a fraction of the original's opening week sales. Hannah Montana the Movie remained in third place with 146,000 units / $2.65 million for the week and 2.12 million units / $36.03 million after four. Fringe - Season One opened in fourth place with 103,000 units, but its sales of $3.85 million was third best on this week's list. Rounding out the top five was Bring it On - Fight to the Finish, which added 99,000 units / $1.94 million over the week for totals of 361,000 units / $6.39 million after two.

A pair of kids DVDs rounding out the top with Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails placing ninth with 65,000 units / $902,000, while Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland earned tenth with 61,000 units / $913,000. The final new release to chart was Criminal Minds - Season Four, which placed 19th with 42,000 units generating $1.52 million in opening week sales.

Blu-ray was good, but not great, selling $12.1 million for the week. That was down 23.5% from last week, but up 71% from last year. To put this into perspective, DVD sales were down nearly 33% from last year. Blu-ray represented 10.4% of the total market and 14.4% of the top twenty comparison. The number one selling release was Crank 2 - High Voltage with about 80,000 units, which was more than twice the second place release.
