DVD Sales - Monster Headache on Sales Chart

October 20, 2009

It's a bit of a mess on the DVD Sales chart this week as there are two releases that can claim top spot. We have Monsters vs. Aliens repeating on top with 721,000 units for the week giving it totals of 2.96 million units and $51.51 million. However, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released this week and sold an estimated 1.5 million units of their DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. This is where things get confusing. The studio has decided to declare these as Blu-ray units. That's enough to be the number one selling DVD for the week, and enough to be one of the best selling Blu-rays of all time. The latter is probably the reason Disney did this, and it could really boost Blu-ray player sales over the holiday shopping season. Second/third/fourth place went to Year One with 349,000 units and $5.58 million in sales. Bones - Season Four was third/four in terms of units sold at 218,000, but second/third in terms of revenue generated at $7.98 million. X-Men Origins - Wolverine added 187,000 units / $3.18 million to its totals of 3.52 million units / $60.18 million. My Life in Ruins either rounded out the top five, or just missed it, with 135,000 units and $2.70 million. This is almost as much as it earned during its opening weekend at the theaters, which is better than expected.

The only other new release to chart was Trick 'r Treat, which opened in tenth place with 95,000 units and $1.42 million.

Blu-ray sales were up nearly 50% from last week and 195% from the same weekend last year reaching $32.7 million; however, you have to remember that includes all 1.5 million units sold by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, so some are disputing this number. It would be interesting to know how many of these people buying the Blu-ray actually have a Blu-ray player at home. It would be even more interesting to know how many of these people will buy a Blu-ray player as a result. Going with these numbers we have Blu-ray earning 17.3% of total sales and 29.4% of the top twenty comparison.
