DVD Rentals: Ugly Upsets Up

November 25, 2009

The same two new releases that topped the sales chart this week also topped the rental chart, although they were in the opposite order. The Ugly Truth took first place with more than 50% more rentals than Up. G.I.Joe - The Rise of Cobra was pushed into third place during its second week of release, just ahead of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, also in its second weekend of release. Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs just managed to hold onto a spot in the top five.

The best of the rest of the new releases was My One and Only, which entered the chart in 11th place. The Accidental Husband opened in 13th place, while Spread was the last new release to reach the top 30, earning 19th place in its debut.

Overall rentals were down 7.4% for the week to $133.8 million; however, that was still 11.1% higher than the same week last year. The rental market has shown double-digit gains on a year-to-year basis for four weeks in a row now, and ten of the last fifteen weeks.
