Weekend Estimates: Avatar Wins Biggest Ever Weekend

December 27th, 2009

Moviegoers set a new record for the biggest single weekend at the box office for all movies combined, based on studios' Sunday estimates. Three movies topped $50 million, and the combined box office will be at least $270 million based on movies reporting so far. That tops the $260.8 million earned over the weekend of July 18, 2008. Avatar was the big winner, falling just 2.5% from its opening weekend and earning an estimated $75 million to take its ten day total to $212.3 milliion.

Sherlock Holmes had a good weekend too, with $65.4 million earned Friday-Sunday. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel pulled in $50.2 million for third place (and set a new record for the highest-earning third place finisher ever).

It's Complicated was disappointing in comparison, with $22.1 million, although that still represented almost $8,000 per theater, slightly better than early awards season favorite Up in the Air, which came in fifth with $11.75 million.

In limited release, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus impressed with an estimated $130,000 in just four theaters.
