International Top Five - Asterix Wins its Second Gold Medal

Asterix At The Olympic Games remained on top of the charts with $24.52 million on 3925 screens in 25 markets for a total of $72.49 million after just two weeks. The film opened in first place in Spain with $2.75 million on 385 screens while it had to settle for second place in Italy with $1.86 million on 357 screens. Meanwhile it was down just 22% in Germany adding $2.29 million on 600 screens for a total of $6.76 million. In Russia it was down 51% during its second weekend, which is better than average for the market, as it picked up $2.19 million on 549 screens for a total of $7.58 million. As for its native market of France, the film was down 58%, but it still earned an easy first place with $9.80 million on 1078 screens for a total of $35.19 million. At this rate, it will take at least a week for the film to match its production budget, while it will likely have to wait till the home market for it to show a profit, but that should still make the studio happy.

Cloverfield remained in second place, but showed some signs of weakness. In the U.K. it was down 53% to $3.22 million on 386 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.08 million. In Mexico it had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten down 48% to $809,000 on 340 screens for a total of $3.39 million. It also fell 63% in both Italy and Spain falling from third to ninth in both markets. In the former it added $798,000 on 245 screens for a $3.73 million total while in the latter it earned $736,000 on 360 screens for a $3.22 million total. On the other hand, it opened in second place in France with $2.95 million on 447 screens, which is a relatively strong start. Overall it added $13.43 million on 3451 screens in 44 markets for a total of $56.86 million internationally with opening in Japan and several other, smaller markets yet to come.

CJ7 opened in first place in Malaysia with $1.9 million on 92 screens and first in Singapore with $1.4 million on 51 while it had to settle for second place in Thailand with $530,000 on 86. This, along with holdovers, helped the Chinese film climb into third place with $11.59 million on 1059 screens in 8 markets for a total of $29.03 million.

National Treasure: The Book of Secrets yo-yoed back into the top five with $10.35 million on 2705 screens in 37 markets for a total of $183.43 million. This week it was aided by a first place, $4.84 million opening on 491 screens in the U.K., which is not the film's last major market. With a French opening this week, it should have no trouble toping $400 million worldwide within the week and $200 million internationally by the week after.

I Am Legend opened in first place in Russia with $5.05 million on 509 screens, which helped the film remain in the top five this weekend. Overall it added $8.87 million on 3231 screens in 49 markets for a total of $317.99 million internationally and $572.20 million worldwide. It will get tantalizingly close to $600 million, but it has run out of markets and it is not like Russia is known for strong legs, so it is unlikely to get there.
