International Top of the Charts - 200 Million Reasons to Marvel at Iron Man

May 21, 2008

It seems last week's drop-off by Iron Man had more to do with the weather than the quality of the film as it recovered nicely this week. It was still down, but only by a respectable 32% to $26.18 million on 7,000 screens in 58 markets for a total of $207.71 million. With that, it has overtaken Welcome to the Sticks and become the biggest international hit of the year.

As for individual markets, it remained it first place in the U.K. where it was down just 3% to $3.78 million on 496 screens over the weekend for a total of $25.59 million after three. The film had nearly identical box office hauls in France ($2.44 million on 654 screens for a total of $14.91 million), Australia ($2.39 million on 365 for $14.20 million), and in Mexico ($2.36 million on 385 for $14.39 million). Meanwhile, it also topped the $1 million mark in South Korea with $2.69 million on 511 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.07 million after three. It has been less profitable, but still more than respectable in Italy with $1.13 million on 345 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.76 million, in Germany with $1.12 million on 644 screens for a total of $6.99 million, and in Spain with $1.05 million on 529 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.17 million.

We will get to the opening of Prince Caspian, and the rest of the $1 million movies this Sunday.
