Men and Women Rise to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

August 26th, 2008

Only two films topped $10,000 on the per theater chart, but that was two more than last week. The number one film was Momma's Man, which earned $11,072 in one theater, while The Girl Cut in Two saw double-digit growth $21,193in two theaters for an average of $10,597.

The only other new release to come close to $10,000 was Trouble the Water with an average of $9,535 in three theaters. The widest limited release of the week was Hamlet 2, but the film wasn't able to capture a wide audience as it opened with an average of $4,271. Granted, that's not a bad start, but it doesn't suggest serious potential for expansion. People decided to save money over the weekend by not seeing I.O.U.S.A., as the film's opening per theater average was just $3,406. The final new release was Cthulhu. Horror film plus niche market plus mixed reviews added up to just $1,438 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for several Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Man on Wire made it to $1 million over the weekend and still has a shot at $2 million.
  • Henry Poole Is Here fell like a wide release, not a limited one, but it still reached $1 million before the weekend and has an outside shot at $2 million before all is said and done.
  • Likewise, Bottle Shock hit $1 million before the weekend. However, it will reach $2 million this weekend, even if it has peaked at the box office.
  • Fly Me to the Moon didn't fall as fast as expected, which helped it reach $2 million early last week, while it made it to $4 million by the end of the weekend.
  • Brideshead Revisited has reached $5 million, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona made it all the way to $5 million since last week, and it has an outside chance to reach $10 million before this weekend. As for its potential final box office, I'm hesitant to guess, but it will beat original expectations, and could match its production budget.
