300 Smashes March Records with $70 Million Opening

March 11, 2007

300 marched into the record books over the weekend, earning an estimated $70.025 million according to studio estimates. If that number holds, it will be a record weekend in March (see full chart), beating the $68,033,544 accumulated by Ice Age: The Meltdown on the weekend of March 31 last year. 300 smashed tracking numbers, which we hovering around $40 million, suggesting that it picked up a lot of ticket sales at the last minute.

In comparison, Wild Hogs's $28 million weekend seems modest, but that represents a decline of only 29% from last weekend, which is a triumph these days. Bridge to Terabithia fell an even more remarkable 23% to move up from 4th to 3rd place in the chart.

Also showing legs in the lower parts of the chart are Music and Lyrics, down 22%, although its run is nearing an end, and Amazing Grace, which fell only 11% and looks likely to finish in the top 10 again.
