DVD Sales - Simpsons Struggle on Top

December 31, 2007

There were plenty of new releases to chart this week, but most did not live up to expectations. This includes the number one film, The Simpsons Movie, which sold 2.76 million units during its first week for total sales of $48.14 million. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was pushed to second place with 1.74 million units sold during its second week of release for just under 7.00 million units and $142.19 million in total. Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End climbed into third place for the week and first for the year with 1.55 million units sold for the week and 10.98 million sold in total. The Bourne Ultimatum fell to fourth place, adding 1.37 million in sales for a total of 4.76 million units for and $76.31 million in total revenue. High School Musical 2 rounding out the top five with 1.14 million units sold for total sales of 3.40 million. So far the DVD has brought in $53.30 million, which bodes very well for the theatrical run for the third film in the franchise.

There were numerous other new releases to chart starting with Underdog in sixth place with 834,000 units for opening week sales of $15.99 million. Halloween earned eighth place with 771,000 units sold giving it $17.24 million in revenue. Stardust sold 419,000 units for $8.36 million, which was enough for 13th place, while just behind it in 14th place with 406,000 units sold was Bring It On - In It To Win It. Balls of Fury sold 369,000 units placing 16th while various versions of Blade Runner sold 249,000 for 19th place.

The Bourne Ultimatum remained the best selling High Definition title this week, but the overall result was the same with Blu-Ray winning 61% to 39%. With HD-DVD pushing several sales this week, it looks like they could finally win a week, but it wouldn't be the first time people were predicting that and it didn't come true.
