Six Pack Sit Atop Sales Chart

February 18, 2006

There were six new releases charting this weekend with Just Like Heaven leading the way on the rental charts with $7.40 million in combined rentals. Doom opened in second place with $6.72 million and should have little trouble topping its domestic box office before long. Flightplan was finally pushed out of first place but still slipped only 20% to $6.57 million for the week and $24.64 million during its run. Fourth place went to Elizabethtown with $5.68 million while Waiting... wasn't far behind with $5.27 million.

The other new releases to chart this week were Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which placed ninth with $3.37 million, and Bambi 2, which placed $1.38 million. Both performed much better on the sales charts.

Overall business was mixed with the total rentals climbing 9.5% from last week to $171.7 million, however, that was still 4.5% lower than last year. Year-to-date 2006 has brought in $969.9 million so far, 9.0% behind last year's pace.

As I mentioned, the top six films on the sales charts were all newcomers with Bambi 2 leading the way after selling 2.5 million units during its first week of release. Doom came in second, which is welcome relief to the studio, but probable not enough to salvage the film financially. Two vastly different films, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Waiting... finished in third and fourth respectively. The leader of the rental charts, Just Like Heaven, was only able to finish fifth on the sales chart while Elizabethtown just missed the top five.

Things were almost as busy on the TV on DVD charts with three new releases in the top five, and another couple making their return. Leading the way was Lost - The Complete First Season, which shot up from nowhere. Fellow longtime release, Family Guy - Volume 3, slipped a spot to second during its 11th week of release. The first new release was The Simpsons - Kiss and Tell. 24 - The Complete Fourth Season slipped a spot to fourth while Firefly - The Complete Series remained in fifth place.

The other newcomers this week were Growing Pains - The Complete First Season in seventh and Moonlighting - Season 3 in eighth. Also, The Chappelle Show - Season 2 jumped into tenth place.

On the other hand, there was almost no change on the TV on DVD rental charts with Lost - The Complete First Season still leading the way with $245,000. 24 - The Complete Fourth Season slip farther back with $175,000, but remained in second place while Season 1 added another $105,000 in rentals this week. Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season climbed a spot to fourth with $82,000, which was just a rounding error ahead of 24 - Season 3's $81,000.

There were no new releases in the top ten, but there were some interesting developments. Firstly, Firefly - The Complete Series climbed another spot hitting eighth place with $60,000 while Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season jumped into tenth place with $56,000.
