International Weekend: The International Man

March 29, 2006

The Inside Man started its international run on top of the charts with $10.27 million on 1,588 screens in 19 markets. Its biggest market was the U.K. where it easily finished first with $3.15 million on 355 screens while Germany wasn't that far behind with $2.17 million on 297 screens. Other first place finishes came in Holland ($414,000 on 65 screens), and in Switzerland ($310,000 on 30) while the film had to settle for second in Mexico with $812,000 on 230 screens. On the other hand, the film finished fourth in both Australia ($390,000 on 178 screens), and in Poland ($224,000 on 40).

The Pink Panther slipped to second with $9.27 million on 3,858 screens in 40 markets for a total of $59.95 million so far. The film's biggest opening was a third place, $1.26 million debut on 346 screens in Italy, which made it the biggest foreign film in the market. On the other hand, the film had a first place, $265,000 performance on 92 screens in Turkey. Its biggest market overall was again the U.K. at $2.12 million on 406 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.32 million.

Final Destination 3 had a surprise first place opening in France with $1.9 million on 369 screens and managed the same placing in Russia with $1.03 million on 163 screens and in Belgium with $286,000 on 44. Things were not as rosy in Italy where the film finished fourth with $1.08 million on 272 screens and it was even worse in Poland and Mexico where the film failed to reach the top five with $151,000 on 38 screens and $359,000 on 171 screens respectively. In the meantime, the film followed up its slow start in Spain with a 51% drop-off falling to sixth place with $470,000 on 252 screens over the weekend and $1.67 million in total. Overall the film added $7.26 million on 1,959 screens in 24 markets and now has $33.24 million in total, which is more than enough to ensure a profit and another sequel.

Any chance V for Vendetta had of compensating for its disappointing domestic run evaporated this weekend as the film fell 49% in the U.K. to $1.06 million on 405 screens for a two week total of $4.24 million. This isn't a bad result per se, but it is not what the studio was hoping for, especially given the connection to the market. Overall the film made $5.13 million on 1,988 screens in 22 markets and now has $17.23 million internationally. This week's debuts included a trio of Scandinavian opens with the film topping both Norway and Finland with $229,000 on 30 screens and $126,000 on 25 respectively. Meanwhile in Denmark, the film finished in fourth place with $186,000 on 29 screens over the weekend and $201,000 in total.

Almost Love, which reminds me a hilarious sketch-comedy show from Seattle in the 80s and 90s. But I digress. Almost Love was the latest local production to open in first place in South Korea as it earned $4.21 million on 373 screens over the weekend and $5.01 million in total. Right now, six of the top ten film are from South Korea with another from Japan and one more from Hong Kong.
