Taking the Inside Track

August 19th, 2006

There were a quartet of new releases to place on the charts this week including two in the top five. Leading the way was Inside Man, as the Spike Lee smash hit easily took top spot with $9.42 million in rentals. V for Vendetta fell to second place with $5.53 million for the week and $14.93 million in total while The Benchwarmers was close behind with $5.18 million for the week and $22.77 million after three. The second new release to chart was Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, which made $5.03 million during its opening week, or nearly a third of what it made theatrically. Rounding out the top five was The Shaggy Dog; during its second week of release the DVD pulled in $4.26 million in rentals for a total of just $9.97 million.

There were two other new releases to chart this week including the direct-to-DVD release, Bring It On: All or Nothing. That release placed seventh with $2.75 million, which is an incredible start for a direct-to-DVD release. The last new release to chart was Brick as the limited release opened in 24th place with $760,000, or just over a third of what it made theatrically.

The overall rentals saw a small bump from last week up 0.3% to $141.1 million, however, that was up by a huge 19.6% from the same week last year. The pushed the year-to-date number to $4.9 billion and helped 2006's lead on 2005 climb to 1.4%.

There were eight new releases to chart on the sales chart, including four in the top five. This list was again led by Inside Man while V for Vendetta slipped to second, just as it did on the rental charts. In third place was Bring It On: All or Nothing, which sold 750,000 units during the first week and that's 50% more than the second film managed and the second highest first week sales for a non-animated, non-family direct-to-DVD release. The best in that category? American Pie Present Band Camp, which was also released by Universal. Back to the top five, fourth place went to Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector while another direct-to-DVD release placed fifth, Ultimate Avengers 2.

Three of the four other new releases to chart were TV on DVD including seventh place Prison Break - Season One and ninth place Laguna Beach - The Complete Second Season. Brick opened in 12th place while The Wire - The Complete Third Season managed 18th.

Topping the list of TV on DVD charts was Prison Break - Season One pushing Chappelle's Show - The Lost Episodes to second. High School Musical remains in third place during its 11th week of release. The only other new releases to chart were Laguna Beach - The Complete Second Season in fourth and The Wire - The Complete Third Season if fifth.

There were no other new TV on DVD releases to chart this week.
