The House Always Wins

October 7, 2006

While three of the top five renters this week were new releases, none of them did particularly well. Leading the way was The Lake House with $7.92 million, which is merely adequate given the film's theatrical run. On the other hand, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift flopped on the sales chart with just $5.85 million, or less than 10% of its theatrical run. Lucky Number Slevin was knocked out of the top spot but its $3.67 million is still a strong result. Fourth went to Curious George with a tiny $2.70 million, but it did perform better on the sales chart. Finally we have The Wild, which is also struggling with just $2.52 million for the week and $9.55 million in total.

There were only two other new entries are the charts including a surprise 19th place finish by Down in the Valley. That film earned $1.05 million during its first week of release, which is nearly double what it earned theatrically. Lastly we have The Notorious Bettie Page in 35th place with $460,000.

Like last week, the overall rental market was up by a barely noticeable margin from the week before, (up 0.8% to $121.5 million), but down significantly from the same weekend last year, (6.7%). 2006 still has a 1.4% lead over 2005 at $5.8 billion, but it is time to show some concern about this recent trend.

The top three on the DVD sales charts were all new releases with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift taking first place with Curious George coming in second. Both of those films outranked their placing on the rental charts, but the same can't be said for The Lake House as it opened in third. The Wild fell from first to forth while Stick It continues to outperform expectations finishing in fifth during its second week of release.

There were only two other new releases to chart with One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season debuting in ninth place while Bratz: Passion 4 Fashion Diamondz was a surprise entry in 11th place.

The TV on DVD charts were quite this week with only one new entry to chart and that helped Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Second Season - Uncut remain in first place for the third week in a row. That one new release was One Tree Hill - The Complete Third Season in second place. Lost - The Complete Second Season remained in third place with Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.5 sticking around in fourth. Gilmore Girls - The Complete Sixth Season fell from second to fifth, but that is still a good result.

One last note, The Office - The Complete Second Season is still in the top ten at seventh place. But that's not the interesting news this week. There's a new feature on the official site where you can get a call from Dwight.
